Panasonic DMC-GF3

Panasonic GF3 specification highlights:

  • 12MP CMOS sensor (standard Four Thirds size)
  • ISO 160-6400
  • 3.8 fps continuous shooting (2.8 fps with live view)
  • GF2-style touch screen interface
  • 1080i60 AVCHD shooting (from 25p sensor output)
  • All-area AF point selection
  • 'Pinpoint' AF mode (magnifies focus point to allow confirmation and fine-tune of AF position)
  • Tracking AF in video mode
  • Picture-in-picture manual focus magnification
  • 460k dot LCD

Comparison between Sony NEX-C3

Viewed from the top down, the simplicity of the two cameras is again evident. Both have shutter and movie buttons on the top plate alongside the power switch, but precious little else. They're also essentially the same in terms of body thickness and (non)pocketability with their respective kit zooms attached.
Here's the GF3 alongside its most obvious direct competitor - Sony's hot-off-the-press NEX-C3. The two are very similar in size: the GF3 is a little bit taller, with a circular bulge on the top plate to accommodate its built-in pop-up flash (the Sony requires an additional bolt-on unit). Meanwhile the C3 is fractionally wider but squeezes in a larger APS-C sensor.

Images which can be viewed at a larger size have a small magnifying glass icon in the bottom right corner of the image, clicking on the image will display a larger (typically VGA) image in a new window.
To navigate the review simply use the next / previous page buttons, to jump to a particular section either pick the section from the drop down or select it from the navigation bar at the top.
DPReview calibrate their monitors using Color Vision OptiCal at the (fairly well accepted) PC normal gamma 2.2, this means that on our monitors we can make out the difference between all of the (computer generated) grayscale blocks below. We recommend to make the most of this review you should be able to see the difference (at least) between X,Y and Z and ideally A,B and C.

    LUMIX DMC-Gh1

    Key Feature

DMC-GH1 can record full-HD movies at 1080/24p or smooth HD movies at 720/60p in AVCHD with a continuous AF function. And, a stereo microphone, featuring Dolby Digital Stereo Creator, records high quality audio. Just press the Motion Picture button, and shooting begins. In the Creative Movie mode, the shutter speed and aperture can be adjusted. When the DMC-GH1 is connected to a Panasonic VIERA via an optional mini HDMI cable, the TV's remote control unit can be used to enjoy playing back with a greater convenience.
DMC-GH1's 4/3-type Live MOS sensor with 12.1 megapixels gives you superior image quality with low power consumption. It also adds a high-speed readout for recording HD movies. You can record images with 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9 aspect ratio. In each, you get the same angle of view and same outstanding image quality. The Venus Engine HD incorporates two CPUs. This not only boosts image processing speed, also helps achieve an exceptional noise-reduction performance. Also, the two CPUs allow long-time movie recording in AVCHD with low power consumption.
DMC-GH1 kit is equipped with the LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm/F4.0-5.8 ASPH./MEGA O.I.S. lens. This compact lens boasts a focal length of 28-280mm (35mm camera equivalent) and supports a continuous AF function that works for both photos and movies. The Aperture adaptively adjusts to each scene, letting you capture the kind of delicate, softly focused movies that only a digital interchangeable lens camera can produce. Thanks to a silence design that helps suppress lens drive noise, the DMC-GH1 with its kit lens records sounds with amazing clarity.
DMC-GH1 features flexible AF function is not only accurate, but also very fast. Adding a Face Recognition function to Face Detection AF/AE, the iA Mode for still pictures serves as a combination of functions that makes it easy for anyone to take beautiful photos. Furthermore, the iA Mode can also be activated in movie recording. It automatically determines the most suitable Scene mode and helps correct blurring, focus, and brightness problems for bright, sharply focused HD movies.
DMC-GH1 can be fit with a mount adapter DMW-MA1 (optional) that allows the use of a wide variety of high-performance Four Thirds lenses, including Leica D lenses. Naturally, the shooting functions of DMC-GH1 remain usable with the DMW-MA1 mounted.* *Lenses other than LUMIX G lenses cannot use the Tracking AF, AFc (Auto Focus Continuous) or Continuous AF functions. Also, when a lens that does not support the Contrast AF function is mounted, operation will automatically switch to manual focus.

    Nion Coolplix P500

    Announced : 09-02-2011
The P500 supports capture of high-quality images with 36x zoom and effective noise and distortion reduction.
    Price: RSP RM 1,498
    FEATURES
    1. A 36x optical zoom NIKKOR lens that covers a broad range of focal lengths from wide-angle 22.5mm through super-telephoto 810mm (equivalent with 35mm [135] format)

The camera's 36x zoom NIKKOR lens covers an incredible range of focal lengths from 22.5mm to 810mm (both equivalent with 35mm [135] format).  So, not only is it capable of capturing wide-angle shots, but it also offers the highest optical zoom power in the history of the COOLPIX brand.  Despite the amazing capability of the lens, the camera body is still small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

    2. Three functions that ensure superior image quality in both still images and movies, even at super telephoto zoom positions
    • Backside illumination CMOS sensor

As light is more effectively received by the image sensor, even images captured at the maximum sensitivity setting of ISO 3200 exhibit significantly less noise.
    • New EXPEED C2 dual image processors

Processing to correct a variety of types of aberration and to reduce noise enables recording of beautiful, high-resolution still images and clear full-HD movies.
    • Image sensor shift + electronic vibration reduction (VR) function

Images captured with image sensor shift vibration reduction enabled are further processed with electronic VR for images that are sharper and exhibit less blur.

    3. Full HD movie recording function with support for the capture of still pictures during recording
The camera is equipped with functions for recording full HD movies (1920 x 1080 pixels) with stereo sound.  The entire optical zoom range, up to 36x, can be used and still images can be captured during recording.  In addition, the P500 offers the same HS Movie function available with the P300.  With the P500, users can enable and disable the HS Movie feature during recording of normal movies to emphasise determining moments, such as when a runner crosses the goal line, with slow-motion playback of portions recorded with HS Movie enabled.  Full HD movies recorded with the camera can be played back on a TV with an HDMI connector, and the camera's support for the CEC feature for HDMI enables playback control using the TV's remote control.

    4. A variety of shooting functions that enable capture of photos as intended

The camera is equipped with a number of shooting and in-camera image editing functions that allow users to enjoy mastering the camera with manual operations.  In addition to [P] programmed auto, [A] aperture-priority auto, [S] shutter-priority auto, and [M] manual exposure modes, the camera offers a number of features that can be combined for maximum flexibility in expressing individual user creativity. Among these features are 8-fps high-speed continuous shooting at the maximum image size (12M 4000 x 3000), Filter Effects that can be applied with image playback, and an Easy Panorama function for capturing horizontal or vertical panorama photos.

    • Filter Effects:  Easily apply filter effects to photos already taken without using a computer.  Soft, Selective Color, Cross Screen, Fisheye, and Miniature Effect are available.
    • Easy Panorama:  Easily create dynamic vertical or horizontal panorama photos.  Angle of view can be selected from 180° (normal) and 360° (wide).  The user need simply move the camera in the desired direction using the guides displayed, and the camera automatically recognises the direction in which shots should progress.  Multiple shots are then combined in a single panorama photo.

    5. Bright and clear 3-inch, approximately 921k-dot tilting TFT LCD monitor with wide viewing angle

Monitor display is bright and clear, making viewing images and applying settings easy, even under sunny skies or in rooms where light is reflected in the monitor.  The high-resolution monitor accurately reproduces even the finest details in photos for more precise viewing, and the tilting mechanism supports shooting from a variety of angles.  In addition, the expanded color reproduction range covers a broader range of colors for reproduction of almost the entire sRGB gamut.

    6. User friendly operational controls

A new continuous shooting mode button has been positioned next to the shutter-release button to enable quick switching between Single and Continuous settings in P, S, A and M exposure modes. In addition, by positioning the side zoom control on the side of the lens, the camera can be held more securely with shooting, effectively reducing blur.
